AFCA Education Programme
Activate has partnered with Derby College to offer the Andrew Flintoff Cricket Academy for students aged 16+. This new partnership currently gives students the opportunity to gain the BTEC extended diploma in sport (the equivalent of 3 A-levels) over a two-year programme based at the college.
Combining this educational pathway with National Governing Body (NGB) qualifications and unique cricket experiences, the course equips students with the skills to work in the cricket industry and beyond, or to progress onto higher education.
Alongside their educational studies, students take part in coaching courses, athlete management lectures, sport psychology tutorials, take umpiring and scoring qualifications and are visited by International and domestic cricketers and coaches. This includes input from 'Freddie' Flintoff himself. Each cricket specific course is designed to equip them with the skills to contribute back into the game that they love.
- Basic cricket coaching course to prepare students to take on the ECB Level 2 Coaching qualification
- ECB AOC Level 1 Umpiring qualification.
- ECB AOC Level 1 Cricket Scoring qualification.
Academy students have the opportunity to access warm weather training as well as visits to elite training facilities and matches.
The key driving force for the Andrew Flintoff Cricket Academy has always been to give children the opportunity to play cricket and to be actively involved in the sport they love. Working with highly skilled and qualified coaches, the students build towards the cricket season through dynamic fitness sessions and technical coaching workshops. The current Academy cricket team is looking forward to a summer of fixtures and to playing against teams from some of England's top Independent Schools.
Every student also undertakes valuable work experience, gaining coaching and umpiring experience at local clubs and on Activate Camps, working with children aged 5 to 16. These experiences allow the students to gain a greater understanding of the pastoral responsibilities afforded to those in cricket roles.
The Academy's first intake was fully subscribed and students are already enjoying the unique blend of cricketing experiences on offer to them.
Derby College is now looking forward to welcoming the second intake of students in September 2015. The programme is now open to Level 2 and Level 3 students locally and across the UK thanks to the first class residential facilities at its Broomfield Hall Campus.
Players will be invited to a one day trial at which they will be assessed for their playing ability and their academic suitability for the course.
